Every bowhunter has visions of a mature buck coming through the woods toward their tree or blind. However, when that vision turns to reality, many times something seems to go wrong such as the deer veering just out of bow range or it stops behind a tree and never presents a clear shot as he moves through. That's why they call it hunting and not shooting.
One sure fire way to eliminate a lot of disappointment and "if onlys" is to put the odds in your favor with whitetail deer foods plots. Not only will you get more shot opportunities when the deer are in front of you, but you'll attract more deer to begin with.
However, if you're like me several years ago, you may think that whitetail deer food plots are only for people who know at least a little about farming and have the necessary equipment to get the job done. Well I'm here to tell you that is not the case at all. Anybody can be hunting over their own small attraction plot deep in the woods next fall.
First though, there are several things you need to ask yourself before you rush out to buy your seed.
- Will this food plot be for harvesting deer or for nutrition to help carry them through winter?
- What kind of soil do I have where I plan to create my whitetail deer food plots?
- What time of the fall do I plan on hunting, early or late season or both?
- Will my plots be accessible to hunt without spooking deer with my entrance or exit? How To Attract Deer To Your Stand
- Do I want to plant my plots for deer once or am I OK with planting every year?
The answer to all 5 of these questions are necessary in order to decide what type of food plot plants you want to grow for your situation.
If you have never created a food plot before, no problem. I recommend starting with a small plot 1/8 acre or less. That's only 25 yards long by 25 yards wide. You'll have less than $150 invested into it and you can do it with no power equipment at all. That really works to your advantage if you have a spot way back in the woods that is inaccessible with equipment. These types of food plots are unbelievable for ambushing deer as long as you don't hunt them too often.
Making sure you don't skip the necessary steps recommended before planting your seed, will give you a hunting experience that your friends will be envious about. Just one word of caution before you decide to create your first of many small whitetail deer food plots. Once you experience the scene of multiple deer entering your honey hole to munch on your plants while you are watching from up in your stand, you will be hooked on creating more food plots for deer every spring and summer.
