I have a reactive dog, what is the best kind of trainer fo this situation?
Dog trainers answer only. He is 22 months old, 91 pound lab mix, medium energy, loves people but reactive to other dogs. Do I need a disciplined patient trainer or a stern demanding trainer. He and I have been in classes for about 5 months so far. He has improved greatly but not there yet. I want to do agility. I'm pooped.
I'm not really answering your q, as I don't know enough about your dog to do so.
But I would advise googling Karen Overall Protocol for Relaxation. This is NOT an overnight fix. You are going to have to commit to this program daily, for years. But it does work. It's helped my dog and many other highly reactive dogs.
Essentially, the Protocol is training the dog in a long series of sit/stays or down/stays with ever wierdly increasing stimuli. The goal is to teach the dog that when he is getting overly excited, he is to relax and look to his handler for direction--not to make a decision on his own.
It does work, but it's a long commitment of your time.
You can use in conjunction with other training programs, you can and will do it all at home on your own. No reason not to start today!
It's been surprisingly helpful with my dog-aggressive dog. Even though that's why we started it, it's been a help in tons of situations outside of her aggression:
-Petsitter did a faceplant while walking my dog, My dog just lay down and waited for a command.
-A tree fell 10 feet from our house in a thunderstorm. Dog just lay next me and waited for me to fix things.
- I was walking my dog one day, A Jack Russel broke through a screen to charge me and my dog. My dog just sat next to me and waited for me to sort it out. My dog-aggressive pit mix sat and looked away from the dog, only to me, and waited!! I wanted to do a victory dance!!
Tons of examples. It works, But not overnight--you have to stick with it.
