Helpful Goose Hunting Tips and Tactics
Goose hunting is gaining popularity each day. Hunters across the country are gearing up in preparation of blinds, decoys as well as calling skills ready for the hunting season. However, it is quite a maze for the new hunters and worry sets in whenever it comes to the initial preparation of the hunting season. This article will help in the steps in the preparation of the decoys, how to spread and all one needs to learn in the goose hunting.
Scouting
Scouting is the most essential step in goose hunting. It helps the hunter identify where the geese will be, at what time and how to wait for it invisibly. This is an essential element throughout the hunting season. To achieve any success, you need to know the rooting area of the goose, type of the food they take and when they get back in their nests. Knowing this will help you set up the traps before they get back. Get also to know about their flight patterns too as well as the fields they go over.
At times, permission may be denied to hunt the geese on the field they fly over. This means that you will need a plan B. This will be setting your traps on the least flown paths. The most common sites for this are on hay fields and pastures. This is especially so when creeks are common in the field. When the temperatures start to decrease, the geese start feeding on grass or grains. Scouting is the only methods that can help you determine the change of habit in goose.
Decoy Spreads
To some hunters, they set as many geese decoys as they have. This is not a wise move and can lead to over working and extra costs for no good results. After scouting, one should know where to set the decoys and spread them evenly. Over-spreading of the decoys can spook the geese especially when they are not used to too many of them in one area. Over spreading of the decoys can only be done sparingly on a field where the geese seldom pass on. This will help draw their attention.
Calling
The setting of the decoys is never enough in goose hunting. Calling should accompany the traps. In spite of this calling process getting the attention of other hunters, simple sounds such as clucks and moans helps a lot in getting the target to the decoy. It is imperative that you don't use a strange sound but rather a sound which they have mastered. Even after they have dispersed after shooting a few of the birds, it's useful that you continue calling. This can attract the younger geese to the trap. However, starting new sounds or hoarse one can easily draw the birds away. You should therefore remain with at least one sound.
Hunting blinds
At times, it is quite a challenge to hide from the birds on a recently cut hay field or pasture. This is where the hunting blinds sets in. The concealment should be placed prior to the hunting day along with the decoys. They should not be scary either but those that the geese are friendly with. A few suggestions to the hunting blinds are creek with taller banks, standing corn or a fence line. This can offer adequate concealment for smooth hunting. Alternatively, one can use the lowest profile blinds which should have as many natural cover on it as possible. Your body should also be covered with either face paint or other natural material.
